Protective style 3: Long, chunky braids

Winter’s in full swing, and apart from being reluctant to spend a fortune on getting my hair braided, I’ve been a bit lazy so doing it myself was also kinda not an option this time. Although I know I’m perfectly able to, I just wasn’t sure I’d be able to squeeze the time in over the weekend or not. So it’s LOOONG overdue, but I’ve finally put my hair away again for a little bit. And even LONGER overdue…I got my hair trimmed!! 😀 After just over a year, I’ve finally gotten my first trim. I’ve been so scared that whoever did it would chop off too much hair or they’d do it uneven…or even secretly slap on some relaxer on it. Seriously, I had a dream about that recently. So it was well overdue and I think I should make a habit of doing it maybe twice a year or so. It definitely needs to be part of my routine.

So Nthasi from work was sooo sweet and was finally able to help me out but it was during the week…after work…over two days! I was so knackered by the end of it (actually even during, I fell asleep whilst she continued braiding). But yeah, here are the results:

I’m happy with them, but they’re very thick until the bottom. I can’t actually tie them all up like how I usually do my chunky twists so I’ve had to be a lil creative with how I style them cos wearing them down isn’t really an option right now. And they’re a hit at work. I think I look so much younger with braids. But hey, that doesn’t bother me anymore. So hopefully, these will protect my hair from the bitter cold for a few weeks…not sure what I’ll do next yet but I’m already relieved I don’t have to stress about my hair breaking etc. for a lil while. I don’t know what it is but I’ve fallen in love again with braids. Every time I’m admiring a chick’s hair these past few weeks, she’s wearing braids. I just hate how long they take. I’m actually contemplating getting smaller ones that will last me 2 months but the thought of sitting for anything more than 4 hours kills me! Sighhh…I think the way to go is get a weave then have braids in the front like how I usually do. Lord knows I have a whole basket of hair that I need to use.

Hi there i think your blog is cool I like the DIY products. I have been natural for 7 years and it has not been easy. Good to see a sista helping others with their hair issues and learning to love their nappiness.

Thank you 🙂 It's definitely not easy but I think once you find your comfort zone, it becomes your norm

Gorgeous! It's funny cuz I've caught myself oogling over others' braids lately too! lol. I've never worn them but they're so beautiful that I'm really tempted. I agree with you, tho – it's a daunting task to sit there for so long! And that's so funny you had a dream that someone tried to give you a relaxer cuz I had that same dream (well, nightmare!) and woke up SO relieved it wasn't real!! LOL!

I'm actually itching to braid again. Yet I'm also missing my fro :S Lol, Our choices are just so endless. With the sitting down for awhile thing, the best way to handle that is getting more than one person braiding your hair at the same time. Oh and the relaxer nightmare actually really happened to a woman I was talking to at the shops the other day! It REALLY happens 😮

Thanks for the response Aisha, I love the spritz it makes my hair so soft and I also use it on my 2 year old dreadlocks it keeps them soft, we both have dry hair

Hi Anonymous and Quarurii, when I have braids in I continue using my spritz and zesty lemon butter once a day and I also use a braid spray which I just buy from the stores to battle the occasional itch. I wash or cowash my hair every other week depending on the time of the year (cowash more in winter, vice versa for summer). I towel dry then air dry. I also make sure to remove my braids before they've been in for three months. Hope that helps!

Hi Aisha when you have protective styles do you still continue using the daily spritz and the zesty lemon butter and how frequent.

    Thanks
