Firstly, I hate to use the word ‘professional’ to label these styles because it suggests other ways to wear your natural hair isn’t considered professional. But it’s how people are describing their hair so I’m going with it…only for this post.
Over the years, many women have told me I’m lucky I can wear my natural hair to work as I’m a creative professional and it’s more acceptable in such environments. I can’t deny that, because unfortunately many people still stereotype a woman with natural hair as being unkempt, poor, wild, fun, and here’s the word again: unprofessional. I get it. We have to work with and for people who aren’t as progressive as we are and you don’t want to feel out of place or targeted for your hair. I’ve been there (even in my creative environment) and it’s not nice. It’s hard enough being a woman in this man-run world, worrying about our bodies, looks, being taken seriously. We don’t want to add anything more to that list, if we can help it. Well, being natural doesn’t always mean wearing your hair in an afro. It’s the default, yes, but there are so many other ways to rock your hair. Trust me, I’ve done the leg work.
Here are three easy ways you can rock your hair professionally, and their tutorials on how to do them.
The Cinnabon
The Back Tuck
The Rose Pom Pom
