Kai’s Wash Day Routine + GIVEAWAY (closed)

It’s been a little while since I shared what I’m currently doing with Kai’s hair. His hair has changed texture again, and has become much curlier than it was a year or so ago. With more curls and the winter cold, I had to switch his products up to a more moisturising mix, so I’ve been using the Coconut & Hibiscus Kids range by Shea Moisture. It’s essentially the kids’ version of what I use on my hair. The line doesn’t have any of the usual nasties I try to avoid: parabens, mineral oil and sulfates.

Daily: I spritz Kai’s hair with his own daily spritz of water + glycerin + olive oil every other day, but try to do it every day in winter as it’s much drier.

Weekly: I wash his hair once a week now, as he’s very active and going to school. I usually do this on a Sunday when we’re not pressed for time. It’s never a guarantee how he’ll take it and these days it consists of me running after him with a comb. #MomLife

2-in-1 Curl & Shine Shampoo & Conditioner

I love the idea of a 2-in-1 for Kai’s hair. The fewer products I have to use on his head, the better, because as I said, he doesn’t have much patience with me on wash day. So if I get it all done in less time, it’s a win-win situation for both of us. I like how it goes on easily and as with other Shea Moisture products, only a little bit is needed. I find that I don’t always have to repeat the washing step, unless he’s had a proper tumble in the dirt. As this is sulfate-free and a conditioner, don’t expect it to foam, but do know that it’s doing its job. I find that finger detangling his hair after having this on for a few minutes much easier and preps his hair for combing later.

Extra-moisturising Detangler

This is the star product for me. Kai’s hair texture is loose curls so it doesn’t get as tangled as kinky hair, but it can still get matted and knotted, especially because he doesn’t sleep with twists or anything (lol). I’ve used this spray after his hair gets into a tangled mess and it makes my job so much easier. It doesn’t have an oily or greasy residue and makes for a great refresher for a mid-week revival of moisture and curls. After I spray this, I run my wide tooth shower comb through his hair. Watch my video on Instagram to see how I do it.

Curling Butter Cream

I finish his routine by putting on a little bit of this cream on his hair to seal in moisture. It’s quite thick and the consistency needs a little bit of getting used to as it’s a bit stretchy, but it goes on easily and is quickly absorbed. Again, a little goes a long way. I find that applying this helps to keep Kai’s curls moisturised for a couple of days before I need to spritz and seal again. Another thing I’ve added to his routine is a satin pillowcase to help keep his hair moist for as long as possible.

All in all, I’m loving this line on my boy. The entire range has a sweet and coconutty scent that’s not overpowering and leaves him smelling fresh. I’d love if they added another styling product like a gel or custard just to help define those curls more, and keep hair in a style, especially for those mamas with little girls.
