Last month, I had the privilege of previewing Keedo‘s Spring/Summer and Christmas collection. I had shopped there a couple of times but I had no idea the inspiring story behind the brand. We listened to and got to chat to Nelia Annandale, a South African woman who founded the brand after struggling to find good quality, eco-friendly, cute clothes for her twins who were babies at the time. She started making them herself and opened a small store after family, friends and passers-by kept asking her where she got their clothes from. After surviving an almost fatal skiing accident, she used her new lease on life to push Keedo (the nickname she gave her kids) further. She’d always been passionate about nature and her brand has an entrenched philosophy of creating everything in a responsible way. 25 years later, Keedo has stores across the country and employs hundreds of people (mostly women) to design and create the clothing many of us love.
The fact that Nelia was a mom after sustainable clothing to dress her own children in, managed to build this company from scratch and is big on empowering and employing other women is such an inspiration for all of us. Talk about #bossbabe goals. Needless to say, I was more intrigued and wanted to share that with you, especially if you’re keen to support more South African brands. One of the best things she said was the quality of the clothing is no accident, it’s meant to be passed down from sibling to sibling, adding to its environmentally friendly ethos. I’m always for saving where I can.
Left – right: The Big Book of Bugs, If I Had a Dinosaur, So Many Sounds, How Many Kisses, What Are You Wearing Today?
I recently paid Keedo a visit to get some goodies for Kai. I noticed that their prices have shifted and become more affordable than the last time I was there, yet the quality hasn’t changed. Their summer collection – especially the girls’ range – is so dreamy. It’s full of cute little metallic backpacks, unicorn headbands and fairy wings. They also have their Christmas range in store, in case you still need to kit out your little one in a smart outfit for Christmas dinner, or treat another child in your life to a gift.
It turns out, Keedo has now become a one-stop shop for not only cute clothes, but toys, accessories, books and activity kits (puzzles etc.) for kids. Being the book-obsessed mom that I am, I was very excited to see the types of books they had in store. Books with beautiful illustrations are a must for me, so you can imagine how many I scooped up.
