I’m sure you all know by now that summer is hands down my favourite time of year. My only issue is, I’m perpetually trying to battle dryness, or rather, working hard to stay moisturised. From my hair, to my skin and especially my feet, I feel as though every year the heat and dryness is on the rise. Living in a dry climate like Joburg also doesn’t really help my routine.
I recently took on beloved beauty brand Avène’s #TimetoSpray challenge, and found myself re-hydrating often with their spring water spray bottles. Avène Thermal Spring Water originates as rain water and goes through a 50-year journey through the Cevennes Mountain aquifer, where it comes out clean and bottled directly in the small French town of Avène. It has a neutral pH and low mineral content, making it suitable for sensitive skin, sunburnt skin and even helps to soothe diaper rash in babies. So I had some fun putting it to good use, pretty much throughout my house and routine…
1 When my and Kai’s hair needs a refresher
Kai’s hair is in full curly spring now – after starting off super straight and slinky. And with that comes dryness. I’ve kept his hair routine pretty much the same as last year, but I did notice that the spritz I was using on his hair would sometimes be a bit too heavy for everyday use. But I also couldn’t leave his hair without a drop of water between wash days. I figured since it’s gentle enough to be used on babies’ bums, I could use it on his hair. I tried it on my own Fro first, then put a bit of butter on top and it works nicely as a mid-week refresher. It’s handy that I can spritz his hair, even when he’s running away and making a big fat game out of it, without worrying about any oil-laden drops on the floor or his clothes too.
2 Right after a shower
I can’t be the only one who’s been taught to completely dry themselves after a bath or shower, then put lotion on. As I always say with my hair care tips, moisturising your hair isn’t enough. The trick is to seal that moisture with an oil or butter. I always use the example of moisturizing after a bath. You always put lotion on and call it moisturising, but what you’re really doing is sealing the moisture your skin has soaked up while in the shower. So I figured that it could help my skin if I didn’t completely dry myself after I’ve had a shower, and put on my lotion while my skin is still damp. Truth is, most times, I’m busy trying to multitask and by the time I get round to actually sitting down to put on lotion, many parts of my skin are already dry. So I’ve been spraying with the big 300ml bottle to re-hydrate my skin right before applying my lotion. Works like a charm! My moisturized skin is lasting throughout the day.
3 When I’m out and about
I feel like my days are made up of driving around and being on the go a lot more nowadays. My friends know me to always have a bottle of water in my car and handbag. Now I’m carrying around the cute 50ml Avène bottle with me everywhere I go. Since the water’s in a spray bottle, it doesn’t get warm and offers a refreshing cool mist on my face and body (especially my chest which gets really hot) while I’m out and about. The 50ml is the perfect size for pretty much any tiny handbag too.
